The heat exchanger medium is mainly refrigerant (freon, ammonia, etc.), water, air or brine. Surface heat exchanger is two or more heat transfer medium through heat exchange wall surface for heat transfer, so that hot fluid is cooled and cold fluid is heated. In heat exchangers, the process of heat transfer from a thermal fluid through a wall to a cold fluid is called a heat transfer process.

In refrigeration systems, for example, high-temperature refrigerants in the condenser pass heat to the cooling water through the wall, and in a full-liquid evaporator, the refrigerant is vaporized, and the heat is absorbed through the wall towards the brine. In the heat transfer process, if the heat transfer "heat flux density" does not change with the time, called the stable heat transfer process; Conversely, if the heat transfer density changes over time, it is called the unsteady heat transfer process. In refrigeration units, the general heat transfer process is considered to be stable heat transfer.
